Let me introduce myself.
First and foremost, I am a working barber of 30+ years (still counting) & I am also passionate about education within the barbering industry. My career started at the age of 13 as a Saturday lad in the family barbering business (established 1967) as a third generation barber. Once fully qualified & after working my way to becoming assistant manager I opened my own shop in 1991 & took on staff of my own. Since then the business has grown into a successful group of 6 barber shops, with 27 staff. In 1993 I decided to develop my teaching & taught a successful part time evening course at a local college for 9 years. During this time, I gained my teaching & assessing qualifications. I was then invited by Habia to sit on the standards review board to give advice on setting up the 1st barbering NVQ qualifications. I am currently an educator for the Habia Skills Academy on the level 4 Male grooming qualification which takes me around the UK & Ireland. I was privileged enough to be asked by the BBA to be the head Judge for Britain’s best shave which has run for the last 3 years. More recently I have showcased my traditional barbering / shaving skills & judged the final UEA Best Barber held at the Beauty world Middle East at the Dubai International convention & Exhibition Centre.
My proudest moment is to be elected to be the 1st Barber Council Chairman & I have held this position since 2014.
Ultimately I am looking forward to sharing my thoughts, experience & advice for the good of our industry.
Let me introduce myself.
I started my career as a Saturday junior in a salon at the age of 13. I always knew I wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps as a 3rd generation barber & carry on the skills he gave me As soon as I left school I was taken on full time as a YTS (apprentice). I attended college 1 day per week for my hairdressing training & also attended night school for 2 nights per week for beauty therapy. At the end of my training I was awarded trainee of the year. To progress my career, I worked for Regis Europe Ltd & progressed to salon manager / senior manager advising other company salons. Managed a very successful salon team of 9 members including 2 beauty therapists. I also gained L'Oreal basic & advanced colour keys diplomas.
I decided to develop my career further & joined Stoke-on-Trent College as a lecturer I completed my 7306 teacher training certificate including D32 & D33 assessor awards. I completed my Certificate in Education with MMU. My main role within the college was to lead the Hairdressing apprenticeships (109 trainees) & engage employers. As team leader I was proud to lead a strong team of tutor assessors who provided a strong link with placements & college delivery. After 12 years I gained a position at the Toni & Guy Academy in Manchester were I was responsible for guiding apprentices through the whole learning journey to complete their training. I led a cohort of students from interview to completion.
Interviewing/Initial assessment / Lesson planning & delivery / Reviews at 6 salon locations / Lesson observations & feedback / Liaising with salon managers / developing training in salons
I enjoyed all aspects of the role especially working with a strong team of grade 1 professionals.
For the past 8 years I have worked at Macclesfield college teaching Levels 1,2 & 3 in Barbering & Hairdressing. During my time there I introduced & developed Barbering & Hairdressing apprenticeships & became an IQA. To keep my skills up to date I also completed my Level 4 in male grooming.
In my new role as Training manager for RB Training I aim to plan, develop, assess & deliver grade 1 sessions in barbering up to NVQ level 3 & develop bespoke training for our industry.
